Toilet Train Guests

Toilet train your guests. Put printed instructions inside their cabins, brief them when they come aboard, and put a sign in the head. Basically, they need to understand that the only thing that goes into the toilet is urine, faeces and toilet paper. Nothing else.

Don’t put in:

  • Condoms
  • Cotton ball sticks
  • Sanitary products
  • Kitchen waste
  • Vegetable oil
  • Detergent, bleach, dish soap – especially cleaning products containing pine oil, petroleum, or alcohol
  • Toilet bowl cleaners, unless made specifically for marine toilets
  • Paper towels

Use marine toilet paper or the lowest grade available at your box store that macerates easily. Provide a sanitary disposal bag or container for tampons.

While you’re at it, make sure your guests are familiar with your waste-disposal plan, posted in the galley.
